While every season sees a new crop of comics superstars being hyped to the heavens, comics legend Eddie Campbell (FROM HELL, BACCHUS, ALEC) has been quietly laboring on his monthly anthology book, EDDIE CAMPBELL'S BACCHUS-- he's now on issue 55. With stateside assistance by Top Shelf Publishing's Chris Staros, Campbell's one of the most persistent and distinguished of the new breed of self-publisher.
Each issue of BACCHUS is a small gem. New stories (currently about Alec, his auto-biographical alter-ego) are combined with reprints of long-unavailable strips, some going back to the early '70s. Campbell also sticks in some personal commentary, a letters page, and some work by fellow Australian cartoonists.
Campbell's comics always take a low-key approach to storytelling. The story's all there, but the characters are usually too cool and laid back to just hand it to you on a platter. You've got to dig a little bit.
And sometimes, I dunno-- like the latest issue, where Campbell/Alec arrives at the airport, and his daughter asks him, 'Why are you carrying a brick?' No answer, no explanation. I just happen to know that the brick is the IGNATZ award given Campbell at the Bethesda SPX/Expo show, but what are other readers going to make of the scene?
You just have to admire somebody ballzy enough to put something like that in a story!
