Goodbye Chunky Rice

Cover, Goodbye Chunky Rice, copyright 1999 by Craig ThompsonTopshelf Comix has some very enthusiastic endorsements behind its upcoming title, including Alan Moore, Eddie Campbell, and Jeff Smith.

From the press release:

"Craig Thompson has drawn us a generous gift: a book which explores the ways people love, hurt and struggle to heal themselves and each other. Sure, "Chunky Rice" is a superb piece of cartooning!

"In a single bound, Thompson has joined the front rank of American cartoonists. But more importantly, it is profoundly humane, heartbreakingly moving and utterly utterly loveable. Even if he never draws another line, this book has earned him a place in my personal top ten. But if, as I hope, this proves to be the first in a long line of Craig Thompson masterpieces, the world of comics will be a more beautiful place. " DYLAN HORROCKS, Creator of HICKSVILLE and PICKLE

With these kinds of endorsements, how can you go wrong!? GOOD-BYE, CHUNKY RICE, the stunning graphic novel debut from Craig Thompson, is quite simply, an absolutely essential tome for every graphic novel reader. This book will dazzle your senses with its Seussian cast of characters and lush cartoony brushwork.

A quiet picture novella of a small turtle, Chunky Rice, leaving his home and his mouse friend, Dandel. His is the classic journey to find one's self, and the deeper meaning of life. This graphic novel is a beauty and is perfect for all audiences.

SCREAMING EAGLE

The late Mike Roy's final comics work is a stunning epic of innovative graphic storytelling. In nearly-wordless sequences running 292 pages, Roy portrays the mystic transformation of a Native American boy into an avenging eagle which wrecks vengeance upon murderous settlers! Especially impressive is one sequence that seems to ascend into a universe of mythic symbols and shapes; very evocative of the hero's spiritual evolution!

Comic book industry giant and Native American history buff Roy completed the book before his death in 1996. Roy, who helped found a museum for Native American and Eskimo art, and draw the acclaimed Native American lore Sunday strip 'Akwas,' produced 'Screaming Eagle' with writer Scott Deschaine and grey tone artist Kimi Weart.

The book is published in a sturdy and impressive hardbound volume, for only $19.95!

NEW Robert Crumb!

Not much to say about the underground comics master that hasn't been said before. Last Gasp is publishing Mystic Funnies #2, with Flakey Foont, Mr. Natural, and all the compulsive abnormality you've grown to love from comics' most beloved expatriate!

Eichhorn is One Tough Nut!

Westhampton House is reprinting some of the best of Dennis Eichhorn's autobiographical comic REAL STUFF. With art by J.R. Williams, Joe Sacco, Chester Brown, Jason Lutes and Seth, CRIMES AND PUNISHMENTS is shaping up to be one hellacious collection!

Eichhorn is the Tough Guy among comics self-chroniclers (although his mentor Harvey Pekar has also been known to throw his fists around...) A comic of his might feature fist fights or shooting up-- but there was always a little bit of Elvis in every issue.

Joey Chips' Wedding Bliss

Followers of Joe Chiappetta's outstanding experimental autobiographical comic SILLY DADDY will recall his disclosure of having broken up with his girlfriend Denise, nicknamed 'Troubles.' As Joe revealed, their religeous differences drove them apart.

In SILLY DADDY #20, Denise informs us of a surprising turnabout to this situation-- '2 months after we broke up, Joe (Chips) started studying the Bible & then going to church. A month after that, we were dating again, & 6 months after that...' Says Joe, 'We got married!'

Although a skeptic about religeon, I'm happy and hopeful for Joe. His work has always portrayed his yearning for emotional fulfillment, and he has often attempted to codify principles for an orderly and fulfilling life. He may have what W. Somerset Maugham called a 'talent' for belief.

But what of his talent for art? Issue 20 is overrun with passages of scripture replacing most of Joe's own philosophical musings. Has he chosen a religeous community that tolerates individual expression, or one that mistakens it for the 'sin' of pride?

J. Scott Campbell's 'Girls of Gen13' signed
lithograph features three scantily clad women
from the series kneeling in bed with their arms
bound behind their backs and frightened looks
on their faces. Says the Previews copy, 'They
may be action heroes, but every super team has
its moments of weakness. And right now, it
seems that the girls of Gen13 could use a little
help getting untied... or perhaps undressed?
Fairchild, Rainmaker, and Freefall have been
captured by the insidious Baby Love, and from
the look of it he doesn't have torture in mind.'
$49.95 from Wizard Magazine!
