THE ESSENTIAL CONAN (Marvel) Roy Thomas and Barry Smith's early Conan comics brought a fresh approach to fantasy adventure with innovative storytelling and art nouveau riffs. Very influential on subsequent comics, these tales probably don't hold up very well (especially printed in black and white) but at 528 pages for $14.95 it might make a good trip down memory lane. At that page count I can't help but wonder if they're throwing in some of the dull John Buchema art as well.
