A Great Comic, a Great Cause, and a Really Great Bargain!

Cover, BLACK HOLE, copyright 2000 by Charles Burns How does this sound? An anthology featuring Charles Burns (BLACK HOLE), Chris Ware (ACME NOVELTY LIBRARY), Seth (PALOOKAVILLE), Adrian Tomine (OPTIC NERVE), Craig Thompson (GOODBYE CHUNKY RICE), Lewis Trondheim (NIMROD), James Kochalka (MONICA'S STORY), and dozens more great cartoonists? A big fat 352 pages in all!

Cover, OPTIC NERVE #2, copyright 2000 by Adrian Tomine Now imagine this incredible anthology only costs $6.95!

Ok, now imagine that when you purchase this incredible collection at the unheard-of $6.95, you are simultaneously contributing to a noble cause?

It's no dream! The EXPO 2000 ANTHOLOGY is published by the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, in conjunction with the SPX: Expo independent comics convention held in Bethesda in September. It succeeds magnificently at its two goals-- to expose the greater public to a wide variety of quality indy talents, and to raise money for the CBLDF.

Painting by Seth, copyright 2000 by Seth The CBLDF raises money to aid comics professionals in the legal defense of their first amendment rights. By doing so, they protect the rights of us all!

Buy this book, folks!

Indypreviews Update

Come December, Indypreviews will complete its second year of operation as a non-profit public service to promote the readership of independent comics. The column is currently carried by the Amazing Montage website and Indy Magazine (www.indymagazine.com). We hope to expand to other websites soon.

The intent of this column is to encourage comics fans to preorder indy titles from their local retailer. In fact, we reference the latest issue of Diamond's catalog PREVIEWS and post the page the day after PREVIEWS hits the shops.

Most comics shops will accept it if you print this page, circle the comics you want, and hand it to them-- just remember to get it in before the preorder deadline (June 10th this month.)

The comics listed here are Joe Zabel's selections of the best independent comics. Excluded are superhero comics, established kids' comics like ARCHIE, bloody horror and exploitation comics. There are many fantasy and manga titles that no doubt have a lot to offer, but are too numerous to list-- we'd rather focus on the offbeat.

Other online preview services include Todd Verbeek's PREVIEWS PICKS, at www.RZero.com/books/previews.html and Johanna Draper Carlson's list at www.comicsworthreading.com. We encourage other online comics enthusiasts to make their own lists-- it's fun, and it's a worthy cause!

THE COMICS INTERPRETER #5
Robert Young's comics review digestzine
really hits its stride with two killer
interviews-- one is with David Choe, the
defiant young talent who created the
acclaimed graphic novel SLOW JAMS; the
other with Ted Rall, a syndicated cartoonist
whose attack on Art Spiegelman in the Village
Voice has made by far the most controversial
artist in comics today. The 100-page book is
also crammed with reviews, including an
unorthodox multiple-personalities take on the
Justice League of America by Gene Phillips!
